Biography

Sayantan is a PhD student in the Department of Cinema and Media Studies at the University of Chicago. His research interest lies in the intersection of cinema and new media, especially the state of cinema in the twenty first century amidst the planetary destruction. He compiled and translated a book named "Masterclass-e Kiarostami" in Bengali, published in 2023. Apart from academic writing, he writes critical and polemical articles in Bengali (here is the link of his blog: https://sayantankatha.wordpress.com/) and co-edits a Bengali webzine named Counter Shot (https://countershot.in/).

Sayantan also made a short film named "...after Asifa" (https://afterasifa.wordpress.com/) in 2018 after the dreadful incident of Asifa Bano in India. He wants to create a dialogue between the academic study of cinema and the filmmaking practice. His favorite filmmakers include Abbas Kiarostami, Jean-Luc Godard, Ritwik Ghatak, Satyajit Ray.
