Biography

Haotian is a PhD student in Cinema and Media Studies. Broadly, they inquire into how aesthetic forms have problematized the relation of aesthetic form itself to lived experience. Concerned with the topic of decolonization, they draw upon Francophone culture and postmodern philosophy to address the voice of absence (la part des sans-part) in film and media, most notably within the contentious “Sinosphere.” They are currently interested in how cinema and media not only represent war but also become integral to the logistics of war, in the Chinese context and beyond. This line of inquiry opens onto their related interests in medical, infrastructural, gender, and ecological studies.

As a photographer, Haotian situates their works at the intersection of creative practice and scholarly inquiry.
