Mary Adekoya

Education: 

In 2006, I received my B.S. in Media Studies from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, with minors in Cinema Studies and African-American Studies. I also began the University of Chicago’s doctoral program in Cinema and Media Studies in 2006.

Entry Paper: 

The paper I submitted with my University of Chicago application was a paper that I completed as a fellow with the Ronald E. McNair Summer Research Institute. It was titled The Effects of Colonization on African Film Industry.

Research Interests: 

African cinema (with focus on Nollywood); African American cinema; transnational trends in Black cinemas; representation of Black women; issues in Black spectatorship; and new media cultures

Dissertation: 

"Shadows of Film: Nollywood and the Vernacular Revolution in African Cinema"
